The Avalon

About The Avalon

Situated just minutes from Clapham Common, The Avalon is owned by the team behind other popular locals like The Bolingbroke and The Abbeville. A complete refurbishment has left the place looking seriously stylish; with banquette seating, impressive light-fittings and a walnut bar adding to the relaxed yet decadent atmosphere. The menu is a cut above standard gastropub fare and Head Chef Adam Hicks uses only the finest ingredients in the hearty British dishes. Our favourites include the Wright's Brother's oysters; the traditional roasts with all the trimmings, the steaks, and the apple and blackberry crumble with cinnamon ice cream. In the summer, diners can sit outside in the garden or on the sunny terraces. With the bar offering a great range of regional ales, fine wines and cocktails; The Avalon has it all!

Great dinner at the Avalon. Service very attentive, good wine list and steak cooked well. Will absolutely come again, especially for the young crowd and fun weekend atmosphere.

Overall, my visit to Avalon was quite disappointing. The service was very slow and the waiters not very attentive – we had to keep reminding the waiters to get our bill. I had the plaice for mains, which had lots of little bones and so was difficult to eat and the vegetables were also cold. However, saying that, I would probably give this place another chance as the other food on the menu sounded lovely and the ambience was quite lively.

Having been to The Avalon many a time before for one of the best roast dinners in the area, I bought my parents here especially on their weekend visit. Unfortunately kitchen problems seemed to have thrown them into disarray and the food wasn't up to its usual quality, we waited 10 mins for the last starter to arrive and there was no coffee for afterwards. Disappointing as I had been raving about this place for ages, but hopefully just a one off glitch.

This is a nice pub but we went at lunch and ate in the restaurant and it was very quiet with little atmosphere. The food was tasty but the salmon was undercooked and when sent back the waiter asked if it was too raw for me, as if it was ok. It then took a long time for it to be sent back and no compensation was offered! Not ideal service!
