Smollensky's on the Strand
About Smollensky's on the Strand
Smollensky’s on The Strand restaurant in central London near Covent Garden, theatres and museums, has long been known for its relaxed atmosphere, fun vibe and party spirit. It seems to be constantly buzzing with lunchtime groups, after-work drinkers, weekend families and lively late evening diners. Smollensky's food is British and Mediterranean and is mainly grilled-based fare. Simple and hearty it may be, but at Smollensky's on the Strand there's real attention to detail – all the meat is from grass-fed herds, for example, and the company makes its own marinades and sauces. With its unfinished brick walls and gentle, subdued lighting, this West End restaurant and bar is cool and unfussy, the perfect spot for simple, well-prepared food and a good night out with friends or work colleagues. The big, chatty wine list spans the globe. Weekend lunchtimes are dedicated to families, with an entertainer, goodie bags and free balloons for children.

We visited the restaurant on a cold Sunday evening so was reasonably quiet. Lucy who served us was particularly attentive and helpful and very good with our 3 year old. The food was good - enjoyed the mussels and bbq chicken meal. Some cocktails were all £4.50 (happy hour) before 7pm so we took advantage of this. Only very slightly let down by the cappucino which was luke warm. Definately worth the 50% off food offer and would return again.
Another nice meal at Smollenskys. Although the service was kind of slow.
Smollensky's on the Strand in London was a delightful experience. The Happy Hour deals were wonderful--we got a 15 pound bottle of wine and we booked a deal that came with 50% off of food. The crab cakes were delicious and we shared the peanut butter cheesecake for dessert. It was delicious! What was really spectacular was the service. Our server was polite, speedy, and met all of our requests accurately. The atmosphere was nice as well--the perfect place to unwind on a Friday night.
This was my third time visiting Smollensky's on the Strand. The starters and mains on all occasions have been excellent but the desserts have become increasingly disappointing. The bannoffee pie on my original visit was one of the best I've ever had, but now appears to comprise a bit of biscuit and toffee, a couple of slices of banana and then masses of (cheap) whipped cream in an awkwardly shaped glass. The mississippi mud pie lacked flavour and texture. So just have coffee instead!
The restaurant was lovely and the price of the food was very reasonable however the restaurant was extremely expensive when it came to drinks (~£20 for their cheapest bottle of wine!). I know the restaurant is in an expensive area, but I feel like this was a hidden cost (cheap online food prices and not showing drink prices until you're at the table). I would highly recommend to anyone that doesn't mind drinking tap water with their meal!
