I chose Shandis for a pre Almeida Theatre meal for 5 of us. Despite being the only party at 6pm we were put on a draughty table near the front door and service was pretty slow. But the food was absolutely delicious and the portions huge - and we got to the theatre on time. The bill came to £21 each for a main course each, shared 4-person mixed starter and 2 bottles of red wine. We loved the flat bread which is baked specially in a proper oven and probably one reason for the wait.
Shandis was an average Persian restaurant; in my quest to dine at every Persian in London I've had better. However what was lovely here was the service, our waiter was really friendly and chatty. The veggie ghormeh sabzi was beautiful, slightly sour which is how I like it. Shame the restaurant was empty when we arrived at 7pm on a Friday night.
We had an excellent meal at Shandis: a Persian restaurant in Upper St, minutes from Angel tube, opposite the firestation. We had not had Persian before but loved it - particularly recommend the smooth lentil soup, puffy round bread (share one between two - they're big!) 'Gormeh' and my partner really enjoyed a well seasoned sea bass. The flavours are delicate, the food visually attractive - & it tasted great. We are definitely going to be regulars.
Shandis' friendly warm service, vibrant decor, and intriguing, relaxing Iranian music soundtrack cheer up a misty November evening perfectly - as do a hard to beat meal of thick Persian soup and fresh herb, feta, radish and walnut salad. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his unusual but delicious saffron rice and chicken dish too. Very pleasant evening and such a bargain - thank you to all involved.
Food at Shandis Angel is nice, not outstanding but good value. Dont go for a special ocassion but for cheap filling food its good!
