  • Chinese Art Around the World: Exchanging Treasures and Cultures at Asia House

    Course

    24 Apr 2012 to 10 Jul 2012

Tracing old and new itineraries of Chinese artefacts around the world, this module explores the variety and richness of objects and ideas. As we follow shiny porcelain, elegant lacquerware, glimmering silks and much more, we will consider how materials, technologies and styles intrigue admirers across continents, and how Chinese cultural traits come into dialogue with other realities.

  • Modern and Contemporary Art from the Middle East and Iran at Asia House

    Course

    12 Jan 2012 to 22 Mar 2012

This module offers an insight into the development of modern and contemporary art in the Middle East and Iran. Starting from early Orientalist painters, we will move on to examining the works of more recent artists from Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt and Iran, whose works on gender, children, war and peace creatively challenge political and social predicaments of their countries.

  • Mughal Decorative Motifs at Asia House

    Course

    10 Jan 2012 to 20 Mar 2012

You will explore Mughal decoration through the ‘Shamsa’ (a term derived from ‘Shams’, the Arabic word for sun). The Shamsa, sometimes known as the ‘Little Sun’, is a roundel or medallion motif that can be found on a variety of mediums, including manuscripts, jewellery and textiles. Using traditional techniques, you will paint a floral-inspired Shamsa using colour on paper.
