London Canal Museum
About London Canal Museum
The London Canal Museum tells the colourful story of London's canals, their people, cargoes, boats and trade, and the horses that pulled the boats and carts on the streets. See our recreated stable and Horse Power exhibition. Discover the amazing Victorian trade in natural ice, brought from Norway to keep London cool, for this charming waterside building was once an ice warehouse. Look down into a vast ice well, uniquely preserved. See archive film, temporary exhibitions, costume, “roses and castles” art, and children can follow the horse’s trail! Download free MP3 audio tours of the canal walk from Camden, and of the museum, from our website.

Not a primary attraction
Most visitors spend around one hour to one and a half hours in the museum. The building is on two floors and could not be described as small, although certainly not on the scale of the major national museums. We find that around a third of visitors spontaneously tell us that they enhjoyed their visit and in surveys at least 90% of respondants would reccommend the museum to a friend.

The Bantam IV Tug
ExhibitionRecurring event
The Bantam class of tug was produced in the late 1940's and the 1950's and 1960's by E.C. Jones and Sons of Brentford. In 1994 London Canal Museum was given number 4 of the class which is preserved as a floating exhibit, normally moored outside the museum, but sometimes taken to canal events during the summer season. The Bantam tugs are unusual in that they are designed to push, not to tow. This is a more energy efficient way of moving an unpowered barge. The tugs were used most frequently for canal maintenance and in gravel pits and other non tidal waterway situations.
