About Firepower - The Royal Artillery Museum

From Gibraltar to the Gulf, since 1716 the Royal Artillery has seen action worldwide. Firepower tells the story of the men and women who served the guns and the technology on which their lives depended. Located in the historic Royal Arsenal, the world's centre for munitions manufacture, secret for over 300 years and still a mysterious blank on the A-Z maps, Firepower takes you from slingshot to supergun, starting in the Field of Fire, where big screens, dramatic surround sound and moving eye-witness accounts illuminate the conflicts of the 20th Century.

  • Field of Fire

    The Field of Fire brings you the artillery in action and reveals the tragic events, great bravery and humor through the eyes of those who were there. Four massive screens show archive film and documentary footage; re-living desert and jungle warfare, anti-aircraft guns defending London in the Blitz' and the bombardment of the beaches in the Normandy landing on D-Day. To bring your imagination alive smoke fills the air, searchlights pick out artillery surrounding you and the sound of exploding bombs shake the floor.

     
  • Gunnery Hall

    Recurring event

    The Gunnery Hall is packed with weapons and vehicles from the 20th Century: anti-aircraft, anti-tank, coastal defence, light and medium artillery, self-propelled guns and missile launchers. Each gun is accompanied by a fact panel with description, technical detail, the terrain and conflicts it was used in and the ammunition it fired. Interactive screens play back video of the guns and gunners in action and reveal more artillery facts and figures.

     
  • History Gallery

    The History Gallery houses a rich and unique collection of historic artillery, instruments, models, uniforms, books, illustrations and personal accounts. It leads you through the interwoven stories of artillery development, battles, characters and the men of the Royal Artillery over the past 700 years up to the First World War. A wide range of extraordinary exhibits including over 30 guns are on display.

     
  • Medals Gallery

    The collection was originally housed in the Officer's Mess at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, with limited public access. The Medals Gallery contains a selection from the over 7,000-piece collection, which is made up almost exclusively of gunner awards. The displays include Britain's highest award, the Victoria Cross, bestowed on 62 members of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, and a rare Military Cross with 3 bars of which there are only three examples in the army.
