The Square Restaurant

About The Square Restaurant

The Square restaurant in London’s ultra-smart Mayfair has four right angles: great food, wines, service, and location. The dining room is a refined space where you can seal a deal, celebrate a triumph, or simply dine incredibly well. Chef Patron Philip Howard has earned a pair of Michelin stars for his unique French-inspired haute cuisine using impeccable ingredients to create dishes capable of both gossamer elegance and vivid boldness all in the same bite. Everything is superb, though we particularly recommend the herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Square’s wine list – wine bible, really – runs to 80 pages of the world’s finest.

My 2nd visit for the Christmas lunch menu. The staff recognised me immediately and gave a very warm welcome despite me being rather late due to delays in travel. I also got an extra amuse bouche, apparently a chef's special - scallops with truffle shavings - divine. Needless to say the meal was perfect - in line with the general style of cooking, nothing too fancy, but always very solid and delicious. The pollock in particular stood out - I think the chefs here really know what to do with fish!

The Square, London. Faultless food. Tasting menu was absolutely brilliant and perfectly executed even when chef Howard was not in the kitchen. Smoked venison tartare was simply stunning in term of flavour...so were the dish of langoustine tail, Dorset crab lasagne or Foie Gras. Matching wine was also nicely selected. The service was efficient and professional although not the most friendly front of house in town.
