Toptable says about Swithins Italian Restaurant

In the heart of the City, in a quiet side street in the Rothschild banking district, Swithin's Italian restaurant is a very special place to dine and entertain. Beneath London's pavements lie the old vaults of Sandeman's, where port was bottled for hundreds of years. These arching cellars are the setting for Swithin's fine Italian dining room. The bricked vaults may have an air of rusticity, but the leather banquettes, gleaming silver and crystal, and white linens create an elegant space for enjoying first class cuisine. The menu includes classic dishes, many with an inventive modern twist. Try starter of fillet of beef carpaccio on mixed leaves with lemon vinaigrette, second course of home made spinach and ricotta ravioli -- all the pastas are home made, with chopped tomato, butter and sage, main course of calves liver and bacon with sauteed baby spinach and mash, or one of the Italian veal, or a fresh fish dish. There are superb vegetarian choices, too. The mostly-French wine list has a few well-chosen Italians and a tempting line in champagnes. Very professional service.

Food and service was of a very high standard at Swithins, though we eat in the restaurant upstairs which lacks the character and ambience of the wine cellar downstairs. You could probably eat a good Italian for this discounted price elsewhere at normal prices, but still a good experience all round - very charming service and tasty, hearty food.

The service was excellent and they even serve up the cake that I baked for my fiance. We had starter and main course and they are both faily big portions!

The food are of good quality so I definitely recommend the restaurant, although it is more of an oyster and seafood restaurant then italian!

Generous portions of well cooked food with attentive service although somewhat lacking in atmosphere on a Monday evening.

An excellent evening with friends at Swithins Italian.A wonderfully warm welcome .attentive service and sure footed cooking and presentation added up to a great experience and fantastic value for money-particularly with the 50% deal. The marinated tuna and ravioli starters were spot on as were the mains we chose-calves liver in the English rather than Roman manner with bacon and gravy but

perfectly cooked and the scallops and steak also got great reviews.Portions were generous to say the least.

Service in Swithin's was fabulous. A very friendly waiter who always ensured our glasses were filled but was never intrusive. Really excellent. Food was very good, and wine reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
