Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution
About Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution
Founded in 1994, the Gallery now plays a major role in the promotion of the graphic arts in North London. As part of the historic Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution, which overlooks Pond Square in the heart of Highgate Village, the Gallery is known for the excellence and balanced variety of its exhibitions. Emphasis is placed on encouraging new artists to exhibit and hiring fees are set with this in mind. There are also regular shows by well-known and established painters. Periodically it hosts a major touring exhibition and arranges talks, activities and outings in connection with some of the exhibitions each year. Anyone interested in learning more about these lively (and sometimes controversial) events should join the Friends of Highgate Gallery. All exhibitions are advertised in 'Galleries' and press releases are circulated to the local media. The venue is also host to the Highgate Film Society.

The Archaeology of Roman London at Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution
Course22 Sep 2011 to 21 Jun 2012
The earliest Roman town was probably more like a frontier town, but the consequences of the Boudiccan revolt in AD60-61 were to change all this. From that date onwards, the Roman city of London began to flourish. This course will examine, using archaeological evidence, the 350-year history of Roman London: its buildings and people, how it was organised and the crafts and trades that were carried out there. Its fortunes changed over the centuries and the sessions will chart its course to the fifth century and its abandonment.
