We had a splendid evening at the Compass in Islington. If you want a laid-back, traditional venue, this is a good choice. The food was mostly good - excellent in places (particularly the veggie options), though mediocre in other places (ox cheeks disappointing). We got the impression that the menu is evolving, which promises much for a future visit! Service extremely friendly throughout, and value very good - 6 hours of drinks and a 3 course meal for £35 a head.

Great food but service can be a bit hit and miss

The Compass had a great atmosphere as always but surprisingly a little bit disappointing on the food side as the veal portion compare to the other main dishes was too small. Were it not for the thick slices of tasty and fresh bread served as a starter, would have left starving. Dirty toilets a worrying sign about the hygiene levels followed in the establishment.

The service was pretty rubbish, even for a gastropub, but the food made up for it overall. some good interestign sihes, and everything was reasonably priced. good atmosphere and all in all it was a fun night out.

Lovely pub with better food than i thought it was going to be! Pork belly had excellent crackling, and sausages were very good!
