Lonely Planet review of Tamarind Restaurant

This is one of those places where you're

passed along a chain of assorted staff before

you actually get to sit down (beneath

huge inverted tea-lights). The slightly older crowd is pretty froufrou in keeping with the beautiful restaurant and neighbourhood, while the food - a cavalcade of Indian classics - is out of this world.

Tamarind, the Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair, is one of London's most sophisticated Indian dining experiences. The chic, gold-accented dining room is elegant, yet comfortable and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Chef Alfred Prasad is renowned for his originality and his seasonal menus put a fabulous modern spin on traditional Southern and North-West Indian cuisine. House specialties include steamed king fish stir fried with mustard, lentils, turmeric and coconut; chicken in tomatoes, fenugreek, ginger and green chillies; and seekh kebabs cooked in the Tandoor. For dessert, don't miss the cardamom rice pudding. Staff are warm and professional and are happy to advise on the dishes & wines. Tamarind offers a range of set menus for lunch, dinner and pre-theatre dining.
