Village East

About Village East

Village East restaurant in chic south London enclave Bermondsey Street is designed to call to mind a hip East Village establishment in Manhattan. It sprawls through a listed warehouse and glass-fronted apartment building and is decorated in polished concrete, rough wooden pillars, striking curved white chairs, and a wide open kitchen. Sit back and enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine while watching chefs hard at work creating the modern eclectic dishes that make up the Village East menu. In layman’s terms, this means European flavours and techniques are coupled with South East Asian influences, resulting in some intriguing combinations. We had our eye on the seared scallops and caramelised pork belly with carrot puree and teriyaki glaze; and the West Cork beef burger with sauteed foie gras, caramelised onion, jumbo gherkin and chips, but if you’re more in the mood for a steak, or fish and chips, there’s plenty of that on offer too.

Village East on Bermondsey Street is the perfect venue for excellent food and wine, not to mention great service.

First time visit. Good set-up - separate trendy bar, open kitchen & trendy modern two part restaurant. Think the Warrington meets Wild Honey for the seating area. Wholesome, powerful produce. Unlike the Garrison (up the road), there is more of a nod to the trendy media/tech local clientele. The menu has a broad appeal, with an emphasis on less powerful meats (sea bream, eggs royals, 3 salads, stuffed aubergine). Good service. Messed up the order, but were quick to offer a free glass of wine.

I thought overall Village East was very good, excellent service and chiled out atmosphere, but the food didn't really live up to expectation - the portions were pretentiously small and the main (venison shoulder) was rather bland.

We had a nice meal on Saturday at Village East. The toptable deal meant a cut down menu but the food was still excellent and very reasonably priced. Would like to return and pick from the full menu which had a lot more variety and choice. The cut down menu was a bit basic - ie fish & chips, hamburger. The staff were very friendly and helpful though - so bonus points for service.
