The Britannia

About The Britannia

Once upon a time, The Britannia was part of the Britannia Brewery built in 1834 by Edward Herrington and William Wells and bought out by Young’s in the early 1900s. It retains the congenial atmosphere of a traditional pub (sturdy wood bar, real fires, ale) but now has a stylish, sunken dining room and conservatory at the back. The place looks especially inviting at night when candles flicker on every wooden table. The food, as you’d expect, is gastropub - much of it fashionably organic. A well-thought out menu ranges from small plates like poached eggs Florentine with Hollandaise sauce, to a hearty 28-day dry -aged Short Horn sirloin steak with béarnaise and chips, and an even heartier châteaubriand for two. Fantastic lunch time specials.

A lovely cosy pub/restaurant with a great ambience. Service is quick and helpful. The menu is well thought out and varied without being too long, which is always welcome and gives the impression that the chef cares about each dish that he or she is producing. My rib-eye steak was well cooked and tasty but a bit stringy and very fatty. There was supposed to be a tomato confit. It was half a raw tomato with garlic. My friend had the duck which she described as "fine".

Very nice pub. A little on the pricey side, but that's to be expected in Kensington.

We had a lovely day for my wife's birthday at this gastropub, tucked quietly away off the main thoroughfare of High St Ken. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the food was really good and wholesome and the whole ambience made for a great, lazy afternoon celebration. With parking on the street £4/hour before 6.30pm, the only tip I can make is to catch the tube if you plan to spend the day here!

If all hell breaks loose, I'm heading to Britannia off High St Kensington to barricade myself in, until normality returns. Its like an old slice of British life, without the power cuts & naff telly. You could lose all perspective of time under that skylight & just dig in to wholesome dishes, assuming the chefs were not all zombies. Then you'd be in trouble...
