Adulis Oval

About Adulis Oval

A laidback yet elegant haven from the incessant traffic of Brixton Road, Adulis offers traditional Eritrean food. Instruments, artefacts, and images of heroes and heroines from the horn of Africa combine to create an unique environment in which to explore a modest range of aromatic meaty dishes such as kulwa, which is lamb fried in ghee, onion and green chilli. Everything comes with enjera (freshly baked leavened bread) or rice. From a generous list of vegetarian options, how about the misnamed foul - a tasty mix of broad beans, onions and olives, served with cottage cheese, tomatoes and butter?

Adulis is definitely a must-try for the experience! Portion size is quite generous and the dishes are rich and meaty. It is almost always full so the atmosphere is quite lively. Highly recommended for groups!

A popular Eritrean restaurant in Kennington, Adulis (Brixton Road) succeeds in bringing a little bit of east Africa to south London. The food is delicious and plentiful - be prepared to share your dish on a communal enjera, while listening to some local Eritrean music and generally enjoying the atmosphere. As long as you're happy with a palatable mix of spices - they have meat and vegetarian dishes - and don't mind getting your fingers dirty then you can't go wrong with Adulis.

I've walked past Adulis many times and it's almost always full but in 2 years I'd never actually been in. I finally made it there expecting to be wowed but unfortunately I wasn't. We had a platter, and most of the components were good. The downside was I really didn't like the fermented bread, which also acts as the plate, and is 50% of the dish. It's not a fault of the chef, it's just that I didn't like it, but if you don't like it then you can't enjoy the food.

This was one of the best ways we've celebrated our anniversary. The restaurant was recommended to my wife by a work colleague and it was an ideal place for a cosy dine-out. My taste buds were very active all night and each helping was like an incredible new discovery. The service was on the laid back side and relaxed. Kirchat for two was a wise choice - the wine selection is really good too.
