Casa Batavia
About Casa Batavia
Set on London’s Kensington Church Street, Casa Batavia is a fine modern Italian restaurant under the skilled control of rising star chef Nicola Batavia. Making his name in Turin’s Michelin starred Ristorante Birichin, Nicola went on to open seaside pop-up La Kava on the Ligurian coast before heading to these shores to join forces with restaurateur Paolo Boschi, a professional with more than forty years experience and a skill for creating the ideal dining atmosphere. An intimate, contemporary dining room with only a handful of exclusive tables, Casa Batavia is tastefully appointed in simple colours and monochrome artwork, the service charming, polite and efficient. The star of the show though is of course Batavia’s innovative Italian-Mediterranean cooking. Many of the ingredients sampled here are imported direct from Italy to ensure absolute authenticity in flavour. Also imported entirely from Turin is the Casa Batavia wine list, all selected from small-scale producers and served alongside food or at the restaurant’s own bar.

Nice food, small portions and would have been overpriced without a tastecard discount. Wine list extensive but very expensive! Nice added extras, free homemade bread and delicious biscuits with coffee.
We had a pleasant lunch albeit it that we hit the end of the lunch sitting on a quiet day. The food was excellent - my only criticism being that the excellent wine selection was quite overpriced at the lower end of the scale. Service was friendly so we overlooked the fact that our prosecco aperitif was initially served in a large red wine glass!
This was our first time in Casa Batavia and the experience was mixed. The for was well conceived but poorly executed. For example the Manzo Tonnato, one of the 'signature dishes' arrived with three pork filets and less than half a tea-spoon of sauce. Whilst this may have been artistically spread along the length of the plate, the fact is that the result was just plain pork filet with no sauce. Poor wine choice and poor service - but the concept could work with better execution.
