Al Volo

About Al Volo

The sprawling Old Truman Brewery complex has become the beating heart of east London’s Shoreditch neighbourhood. Al Volo restaurant has a prime spot, including a summer terrace, in Ely’s Yard – the perfect place for a working lunch or a revitalising pit stop after visiting the nearby Spitalfields or Sunday Up Market. Al Volo has struck the perfect balance of sleek design and Shoreditch cool and great, unpretentious food; all of that plus friendly service makes this a dining destination. It shows too – peak times get very busy and booking is recommended. There are piadine, pizza and grilled mains on offer here, but fresh pasta is really the star of the show; we love the parma ham and ricotto ravioli with Italian bacon and a blend of pistachio nuts, parmesan and olive oil. Customers also rate the fresh burrata antipasti, and mouth-watering home-made desserts, including an addictive tiramisu.

Al Volo has been refurb'd since our last visit and it has funked up. Pizzas are still the best this side of London. Not sure about the washing machine theme at the bar but we liked the new decor. We both has Piccante pizzzas but the calzones are also worth a try. Great expresso as well. Will always return as this is our 6th visit.

Al Volo in London, just off Brick Lane, was sadly a huge let down. I would have to say it was about the worst Italian food I have had in the UK. The service was generally poor with some of the staff who were in very bad moods to the extent where they came across as openly hostile. It is central, it is nice to sit outside (they do the best to hide the fact you are sat in a car park) and the menu is not too expensive but that does not really matter when the food and service are so poor.

Visited Al Volo (Shoreditch) on recommendation from my boss. I wasn't disappointed with my pizza - very healthy, lots of tomatoes and rocket, and the chilli oil was some of the tastiest ever. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even if we did have to shout to get their attention. We had a table outside which was lovely. The meal was spoiled by un-cooked pasta that had to be sent back and some terrible wine. I'm convinced the Italians, cleverly, only export the bad stuff.
