The Gay Hussar

About The Gay Hussar

The Gay Hussar can be said, without a shadow of a doubt, to be one of London’s most famous restaurants. A long time haunt of top politicos and media types – well, it is in the centre of swinging Soho after all – this fine restaurant has been flying the Hungarian flag over the English capital for more than fifty years now. Cosy and comfortable but certainly not without elegance, The Gay Hussar’s dining room is anything but generic with higgledy piggledy rows of books lining the room and endless caricatures of notorious public figures fuelling thousands of conversations. An interesting range of authentic Hungarian dishes and matching Hungarian wines complete this unusual experience.

The Gay Hussar in Soho is an institution, and as such the small eccentric room lined with books, sketches and photos mainly on politics and politicians is a large part of the experience. Chilled wild cherry soup was thick and creamy, but a little went a long way. Crispy duck and venison goulash were both fine and the wine list is reasonably priced. Service was friendly and attentive. All in all a place I would strongly recommend trying out at least once.

The Gay Hussar is London was quirky, classy and authentic all at once. Fantastic Hungarian food, which felt it hadn't been modified to appeal more to an English palette, and friendly but efficient service. Would recommend.

Eating at The Gay Hussar in Soho was a superb experience. New to Hungarian cuisine, it certainly won't be the last time we go there. The food was delicious and authentic (my girlfriend is part Hungarian). The staff were friendly and attentive to the right level. The interior of the restaurant is elegantly decorated of various images and art works. Very nice ambience. Slightly over priced. Would recommend this place.

Soho stalwart delivers beautifully - lovely central European food, generous flavours and portions, attentive service and a lovely old world feel to the heavy white tablecloths and the decor.

Great tasty food, service was a little slow and no current top table deal, but will definitely return.
