The Banana Store

About The Banana Store

The Banana Store restaurant in London’s fast-developing Bankside enjoys an enviable position beside Borough Market. This space was once used as a banana warehouse where unripened West Indian bananas were stored before being delivered to retailers – hence the name. Now a first class restaurant serving modern European and British cuisine made from the finest ingredients, The Banana Store has exciting menus that change fortnightly to make the most of peak seasonal produce. On Saturdays, the restaurant offers the unique ‘Eat What You See’ option, where diners may choose their own ingredients from Borough Market and bring them to The Banana Store to have them cooked to order for £15 –no roasts allowed. The décor is quirky and interesting, with bold colours in an intimate space, the ambience relaxed and the beers and wines are just as intriguing as the food menus themselves. Oh, and Thursday night is steak night.

Went to the Banana Store, Borough Market, for lunch. Bit of a hidden gem around the back of Borough Market. Don't think they get much passing trade - there was only ourselves and one other table dining on our visit. A shame as its well worth a visit. Small but good menu that changes weekly. Good selection of specials too. The hake with pancetta and cabbage was very good. Would definitely go back but in the evening in the hope that it would be a bit busier with bit more of an atmosphere.

This close-to-Borough Market diner is in a great location but accesses from Winchester Street (not Cathedral). friendly staff and a daily selection of 3-4 specials for both starters and mains. Satisfying, well prepared and served dishes all round.

We visited The Banana Store for a Saturday lunch. They were excellent in acting on my booking request for high chairs and even called me back on the day of the booking related to some allergy issues I had mentioned. The food was nicely cooked, portions rather small for your average adult, the men left almost hungry after puddings and all. the restaurant was rather empty, only two busy tables while we were there, so not much of an atmosphere to comment upon. nice, but not eager to return.

Great location right by the market, had a wondeful lunch with friends here. The deco is rather dated but the service was good. We had young chidren with us and they were individually catered for. The food was fresh (claimed from the market that day) However our steak was over cooked. However all in all an enjoyable meal. The restaurant is siuated in a basement so not so great on a summers day (unless avoiding the day light!!) Popular choice though - would go back again.

NOTE: the entrance to The Banana Store is on the road opposite Borough Market, not Cathedral Street. The restaurant itself is very nondescript. Restaurant was quiet with Heart playing in the background. Staff seemed unaware that I'd made a reservation, but appeared friendly. I ate from the lunch menu, choosing the pasta special. Food was good and made from fresh ingredients, although starters were limited to fish and vegetarian (with cheese). 10% is added to the bill (not initially mentioned).
