Lonely Planet review of Dali Universe – County Hall Gallery

Reviewed by: Lonely Planet

This is Europe's largest Dalí collection, and the artist's regular leitmotifs - melted watches, fire, crutches and drawers - appear in more than 500 works on display, including his famous Mae West Lips Sofa, the backdrop he painted for Hitchcock's film Spellbound. There are also objects inspired by Dalí's work.

Just like the Saatchi Gallery's Young British Artists, the Spanish surrealist Dalí was a masterful self-publicist. His impish, moustachioed face frequently crops up in his own works, and as he himself notes in the tunnel of quotes leading to Dalí Universe's main gallery, 'Modesty is not exactly my speciality.' Entering the main room, with its black ceiling and floor, black and mirrored walls and low lighting, is like stepping into the artist's deliciously twisted subconscious.

I found that for L12 it wasn't value for money and whilst his sketches interested me I thought i was paying to see his famous works... i understand that the majority of these would be held in the Barcelona exhibition but it left me feeling slightly cheated as it was as if the London exhibiton was just there to show his left over, not as popular art works.

I reccommend the London Aquarium next door ;-)

there is far more in this place then you might think. lovely staff helped us reduce the entrance price with a student and 20% map discount (you can get these maps anywhere and they have vouchers for london attractions). there is great variety and you see many pieces that are not as well known, a scattering of furniture, sculpture, sketches and statues. the only thing that disappointed me was the size of the gift shop as there wasn't a huge array of choice.

Dali's work is not something i have an interest in really. A couple of weeks ago i came to London for a weeks holiday. On my last day i went into the Dali Exhibition, at County Hall. It was on behalf of my daughter really, who loves Dali's work.

I did think it was a bit expensive at L12.00, but i was blown away by what i saw. It was fantasic, so much too see, and so many models to look at.

I was impressed, and i liked the section on Picasso. I went into the gift shop at the end to buy my daughter something for her birthday. I was very pleased with how i was looked after by the staff member that was on duty. She was very helpful.

I had a lovely time there, and would quite happily go there again, next time with my daughter.

I just read the review "misleading and a rip-off".. 5 days ago i visited this exhibition and i was shattered. I thought I knew Dali well because I am acquainted with his most popular works. But there, in the gloomy rooms of the gallery i managed to gain a real insight into this man's bizzarre world...it was awesome, we spent more than 2 and a half hours there and didn't want to leave..

So my review targets all these people who go to such exhibitions only so that they can brag and boast that they have seen those works of art that their friends, just as incompetent, have heard about...they have no respect to art and artists, they are snobs who count their pennies to suck up to their egos..

I want to thank to the company that runs the exhibition, i could never imagine that i would have the chance to see more than 500 works of one of the best artists..and the 9 bucks i paid are the luckiest 9 bucks i spent in my whole life.

A gallery devoted to the Spanish artist Salvador Dali, this attraction is located just across Westminster Bridge in County Hall, next to the London Eye. Admission per adult is 8 pounds fifty ($16.00 USD),

The exhibit features mostly insincere sketches made by the famous abstractionist, but also houses some of his more competent metal sculptures and furniture designs. The pieces on display here are Dali's least interesting works.

To be found in the basement level of the exhibit are still more crappy sketches created by Pablo Picasso, with added photos of the artist at work and leisure on display. For $16.00 USD admission this attraction was quite a rip-off and should be avoided by budget travelers, especially when factoring in the cost of the tube.
