Kumkapi
About Kumkapi
The only restaurant of its kind in London’s up and coming Stoke Newington, the centrally located Kumkapi is focused very firmly on fish with a Turkish twist. A very friendly, welcoming dining room with a relaxed atmosphere, Kumkapi is hard to miss – a large aubergine-painted building situated on a corner of Stoke Newington Road, its wide windows offering a glimpse of the happy diners within. The interior is rustic and warm with exposed brick, colourful lanterns and mirrors set alongside the swagged and draped fishing nets, buoys and ropes that illustrate the sea-theme of the menu. Fresh fish and seafood features throughout the Kumkapi menu, the dishes based on traditional Turkish flavours and joined by a sprinkling of meat and meze choices for variety. Once a month a specially themed Turkish night, complete with live modern Turkish music, takes place to really capture the spirit of Kumkapi’s roots.

Hmmm, Kumkapi does some fish, but from our experience it was much more like its nieghbours - a better than average kebab shop. The fish soup (a £3.50 starter) was exactly the same stuff as the seafood casserole (£11.50 with none of the exotic fish or any sides). Much of the menu, especially the fish, was not in that day (and we ate early, pre-gig). The wine was poor, although our waitress promised much. Walk through the diner to the loos - this is an eat-in kebab shop in Dalston.
Thank goodness for Kumkapi in Dalston, London. In a very "meaty" area it specializes on fish dishes, perfect for pescatarians.
Kumkapi is unusual amongst the string of Turkish places in Dalston/Stoke Newington in majoring on fish, though there are plenty of meat choices too. The food is well cooked and good value, with a number of not specifically Turkish dishes. Friendly if slightly hesitant service.. Would go again.
KUMKAPI, N16 7XB: A specialist fish restaurant with a wide range of fish cooked in various Mediterranean styles on the menu. We ordered grilled mullet which was excellent and a fish casserole which was also of a very high standard. The service was outstanding, friendly and welcoming without being intrusive. A restaurant which is highly recommended.
We could not find it! The street numbers go from 52, across a junction to 36. We walked up and down the street twice and then abandoned the search - it was too cold. We will try to find it again and eat there at some later point.
