El Gaucho

About El Gaucho

El Gaucho was the first Argentine steakhouse restaurant in London, opening in 1992, and now has two restaurants in central locations - Chelsea and South Kensington. The South Kensington El Gaucho is located right in the centre of the action on the Old Brompton Road nestled amongst the bustling boutiques, antique shops and art galleries - the ideal place for your business meeting, dinner or even small parties. El Gaucho draws an eclectic, meat loving London crowd, and the kitchen is famed for its juicy ‘a la parilla’ steaks. All of the restaurant’s prime quality steaks are imported directly from Argentina and the authentic recipes are all made with high quality ingredients. The gaucho inspired interior here adds to the rustic charm of the place, and the dining room is suitable for all occasions from family dining to corporate lunches. El Gaucho is a trusted and popular old South Kensington institution.

El Gaucho in South Ken is part of a small chain and although the menu is very similar, the South Ken branch loses out in some ways. The room is smaller, but more touristy and less cozy. And although the steaks are very good in raw quality, they are served on sizzling hot metal skillets which is a TERRIBLE way to serve steaks. Even if they are cooked as ordered, they continue cooking on the skillets and end up unevenly and over-cooked from the bottom up - a real waste of excellent steak.

I went to El Gaucho with my family . The restaurant is quite cramped but felt cosy. We were there for quite a while before anyone came to take any orders, and when the orders had been taken, it took a long time to get drinks (and one never turned up!) The food looked great but the steaks were really rare and bloody, even though we had ordered medium- we had to send one back as it was practically raw! The other meals we had (including lamb and chicken) were great!
