A pleasant ten minute stroll (drivers will be pleased to know parking is plentiful) from the centre of southwest London’s Putney and on the fringes of Barnes Common is Cantinetta restaurant, a neighbourhood Italian with a grand reputation; the fabulous food has earned it two AA rosettes. The emphasis here is on excellent ingredients, many of which are imported directly from Italy. The menu is an appealing mix of traditional dishes and more unusual ones; you could start with classic Italian flavours like creamy burrata with roast cherry tomatoes and olive oil, and then move onto a distinctly modern Italian main of ginger-marinated chargrilled poussin. The dining room at Cantinetta is decorated in a modern style, with white walls, modern art and simple wooden furniture creating a laid-back atmosphere. In the summer months, Cantinetta is the place to be: al fresco dining is available on the shaded pavement terrace.
