Piccadilly is a traditional shopping area home to some of the oldest British retailers. Fortnum & Mason is a genteel store in the heart of the area. Established in 1707 and holder of three Royal Warrants with five floors of luxury, Fortnum & Mason is legendary. It has a very traditional reputation and is probably best known for being the stockists of some of the finest foodstuffs in the city. If you want specialist teas and caviar then this is the place to come. But don't forget to venture beyond the food department. In fact the shop's upper floors are home to lots more departments all devoted to celebration and entertainment - from unique gifts for men and women to cosmetics, homewares, luggage and more. It's well worth a closer look to fully explore all of the store's six floors.

Itchy review of Fortnum & Mason Plc

A tourist essential but one we reckon every Londoner should check out too. A food-hall designed to rid you of the best part of twenty quid in seconds and all the ye olde English tea caddies and biscuits an American visitor could ask for.
Lonely Planet review of Fortnum & Mason Plc

London's oldest department store celebrated its 300th birthday in 2007 by not yielding to modern times (its staff are still dressed in old-fashioned tail-coats) and keeping its glam food hall supplied by the famed food hampers, cut marmalade, speciality teas and so on. Downstairs is an elegant wine bar designed by the man behind the Wolseley. Clothes, gifts and perfumes occupy the other six floors.

A stone's throw from Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace, Fortnum and Mason is part and parcel of traditional Englishness and the St James's Restaurant is no exception. Original oil country scenes and seascapes adorn the walls. Tables are well lit and well spaced. The menu is British through and through and takes advantage of Fortnum's special suppliers. Not surprisingly, one of the favourite dishes is roast Aberdeen Angus Beef. Wine List of 28 Fortnum& Mason Wines. Afternoon Tea available from 3pm - 5pm daily. What a treat.

The Queens grocer first opened its doors to the public in 1707. Today, Fortnum is a luxury department store, and its magnificent food hall is packed with delicious, high-quality produce. The stunning window displays never fail to delight. The lower ground floor has recently been refurbished.

afternoon tea was a hit
I went to experience an English afternoon tea. Great idea from a tour guy.
Fabulous store but not a fabuous place for tea
This traditional London department store is definetely worth a visit. Try and get there at opening to see the clock (and the little men come out) on the front fascade of the building. The stationery section is lovely, I bought some nice 'Thankyou' cards. However, the tea at the restaurant on the top floor was not. The sandwiches were dry, the staff not accomodating and always rushing around - spoiling the atmosphere. Go to shop but not for tea (go to the Lanesborough instead, just down the road)
A Royal grocery store
Warning: Shop here only on a full stomach because once you see the food displays, you will want a taste of everything! Fortnum & Mason is THE foremost food shopping experience in the world! Better than Harrods! The sales staff is helpful and dressed in morning coats. You will find an amazing array of chocolates, teas, biscuits, jams and other assorted ready-to-eat goodies. Where else can you buy reindeer pate? Black truffles and caviar? Fortnum & Mason is a great place to buy a little taste of London to take home.
Note: Afternoon tea is no longer served in The Fountain restaurant, but rather up in the tea room on the 4th floor. Afternoon tea is nicely done here with a lovely piano accompaniment.
