About Ham House & Garden

Built in 1610 and extended in 1670 when it was at the heart of Restoration court life, Ham House is Europe's most complete surviving example of 17th century fashion and power. The garden is one of the few formal gardens to survive the English Landscape movement, and out buildings house an Orangery, brick ice house, dairy and still house.

If walls could talk, those at Ham House would give a fascinating account of Civil War and Restoration intrigue. At the centre of power, politics and fashion during the 17th century, much of this National Trust property's original interiors remain intact. The celebrated formal gardens, especially the Cherry Garden with its lavender parterres, continue to impress visitors.

Ham House is unique with it's busts encased in the brick wall and house itself. The wilderness in back is magical. With 6-7 foot hedges that make a maze of soft grass paths. Hidden resting huts scattered throughout make for a peaceful & reflective experience. In front of the property is a meadow area where people bring their dogs to run and play along the River Thames.

Take the tube to Richmond and walk around this lovely historic town, which is yet officially a part of London.

The view from Richmond Hill towards the Thames is one of the most popular with painters and Richmond Park offers great walks (and a glimpse towards St Paul´s which must not be disrupted).

Ham House, owned by the National Trust, is within a short bus ride from Richmond Station, the service runs frequently (get off at the Lord Nelson pub and follow the signs to the house) - it is a Stuart building and the interior is respectively to that period. Reputably, Ham is one of the most haunted houses in Britain. Both house and garden are well worth a visit. In the warmer months, it is also possible to take the ferry nearby to Marble Hill House, which is on the other side of the Thames.
