Situated only a short walk away from Peckham Rye Park, The Herne Tavern in London is a perfect gastropub and restaurant for the family to stop off for lunch or dinner. The building is entirely non-smoking and at the rear is a beautiful and secure landscaped garden with a play area for the children. The interior balances the warmth from the oak panelled walls and original wooden floors with an airy feel created by the abundance of natural light and the neutrally painted sections. Lunch and dinner are served every day by The Herne’s head chef David Fegan, who uses organic and free-range produce to create a blend of traditional English dishes and modern British cuisine. A healthy, homemade children’s menu is available, and the keen drinker will love The Herne’s open fire, the bar’s extensive wine list and the ever changing selection of the best British real ales.

Really good lunch at Herne Tavern today with friends. We were a large booking and I'd specifically asked that we sit in the conservatory, which they had done so plus points for that from the start! Great food, starters on the small side but once you saw the size of the mains you understood why! Only slight negative was having to wait a few minutes after the mains arrived until the kids meals came (and we'd actually asked for them to come with the starters), but overall a really lovely time had by all.
Love the Herne, it's a local, staff were a bit over-run on Sunday but they're always friendly. Will be back of course.
As always, The Herne Tavern provided good food, served well, in what probably should be described a gastro-pub - but without any of the pretensions that entails. Yep, there are quite a few children. But the playground is always a hit. So one o the children was mine. Go.
