What an engaging tour!
This was my 3rd trip to London & I finally got to go on a tour of Highgate Cemetery. What a beautiful & interesting place to visit! We went on a Saturday so we could tour both the Eastern & Western cemeteries (the western is only accessible by tour--it's best to go on a Saturday, as they have hourly tours beginning at 11:00 am). The staff were very friendly & our tour guide was very engaging & had some great stories to tell. It was fascinating stuff! And the cemetery itself was so beautiful--lovely statuary everywhere & very lush--I took tons of pictures. This tour is a must, especially if you want something a little different from the usual Tower, palace, & museum tours. Well worth seeing!
Very poor for cyclists
We went to Highgate on the weekend, and were continually treated as second rate citizens as we were cyclists. It was if we were not wanted at the cemetery.
Warning to all cyclists - there is no parking available at the cemetery and my cycling helmet was deemed to offensive to take inside!
The cemetery was interesting but this was overshadowed by how rude the staff were in both East and West Cemeteries - ruining my day.
Well worth visiting
This is a great way to spend an afternoon in London.
The West Cemetary is run by the Friends of Highgate Cemetary ((--)). The tour cost L5, can be booked in advance and last about an hour. Our guide was veryinformative, happy to answer questions and interested in his subject (so was enthusatic). The cemetary is an amazing place and the monuments are incredible.
I'd recommend a trip here to everyone - although the paths are very uneven so sensible shoes are a must. Its probably somewhere to avoid in wet weather as the paths are steep and as they aren't paved walking could be a problem.
Best Tour In London
Fantastic place, the tour was fasinating and was taken by a very enthusiastic guide who knew a great deal about the cemetery and the people buried there. can't wait to go again.
What a surprise.
We were looking for off the beaten trail place to visit. So we took the tube and went to Highgate. At first we were all just looking around, but deceided to take the tour.
Our guide took us on a hour long walking tour explaining what alot of the statues meant and who was buried where. What an interstings and enjoyable tour. The cemetary itself is kind of spooky and the day we were there it was cloudy. The guide let us take pictures. We let there with alot of English cemetary knowledge. Go figure we would have learned so much.
