Il Portico
About Il Portico
Renowned as London's oldest family-run restaurant, Il Portico has been hailed as the 'perfect Italian restaurant' by critics and the restaurant – located on Kensington's High Street - has been going strong since Pino Chiavarini opened its doors in the 1960s. With helpful and knowledgeable service, wholesome home-cooked meals and an excellent wine list – you really couldn't find a better Italian experience in the capital. The elegant dining room is furnished with high-backed deep-red banquettes, rustic floorboards, bare brick walls and fresh flowers, and the menu is filled with moreish dishes such as the home-made fresh Tuscan bean soup served with ditallini pasta and the tagliatelle with spiced wood-roasted Tuscan sausage and marinated sun-dried tomatoes.

Lovely authentic food without excessive fuss - this is a traditional Italian restaurant where to fill at ease and enjoy good food and wine. The bread was perhaps a bit disappointing but the limoncello made up for it. The wine list is traditional but the Pinot noir from alto adige was light and modern. Service was not as attentive as one would wish and we felt a bit rushed at the end of the evening when they started to clear up before we had had time to ask for the bill at around 1130 pm.
I have now been to this restaurant twice and both times it was a fantastic experience, the food is amazing, the service is excellent and the ambience is great, it is always busy but you don't feel overcrowded, it is a very comfortable and relaxing environment, I would go more often if only I didn't live 150 miles away!
Excellent Italian dining and friendly service at Il Portico
Food and service excellent at Il Portico, but rather overpriced for a lunchtime we felt.
I had the most delicious meal, to start with some nice fresh king prawns that not only tasted good but also were beautifully presented. For the second course I had a lovely calves liver, served to me tasting absolutely amazingly . This was one of the few restaurants I have had calves liver where they have cooked it perfectly so most delighted. The wine was remarkable value a decent bottle for under twenty pounds but plenty more options for someone with a higher budget. The atmosphere for a Monday night was good most of the tables were full and you could just enjoy the evening. Which I duly did. Many thanks I shall definitely visit again.
