Toptable says about Vivat Bacchus

With its unrivalled passion for fine food and wine, Vivat Bacchus has been charming Farringdon foodies since it opened back in 2003. The restaurant itself looks like a smart wine cellar, with lots of exposed brickwork and natural wood, and the atmosphere is laid-back and unpretentious. For the wine lovers, there are five cellars housing over 18,000 bottles; while cheese fans can peruse local and imported varieties in the walk-in cheese room. The restaurant's a la carte menu changes very six weeks and ranges from modern European classics to dishes inspired by Africa and the Pacific Rim. The chef often includes exotic meats like springbok and Wagyu but if you like to keep things simple, the Cote de Boeuf for two to share is an excellent choice.

I arrived at Vivat Bacchus from Blackfriars and saw only the entrance to the cellar part. Had a very grand "ploughman's" - the "cheese lnuch" - and it was excellent: you go into their little cheese room and choose three cheeses from an interesting selection. The price, though it included a glass of a very good house wine, was probably rather steep for a grand "ploughman's". On my way out I saw there was a much bigger room upstairs with a cheaper fixed price menu advertised outside.

Vivat Bacchus was having a challenging day with the toilets out of action in the basement and then a power cut. We still had a good time & the staff certainly deserve a pat on the back for coping - showing the cheese room by torch light !

we had duck terrine & quail's eggs starters, both excellent, but the duck was the winner. Springbok & rib eye steak both good. Dessert platter was slightly disappointing, cheese would have been a better option. Service friendly & attentive. We will definitely return.

The small restaurant downstairs at Vivat Bacchus was fairly quiet with a small birthday party and a few business men. Soup and rissotto were very nice and lamb good although I felt the quality of my steak was not fantastic even if well cooked. Pudding of apple crumble was good. whilst the food was reasonable value the wine was less so. The waiter initially suggested one at £45 a bottle. Settling for one at £35 I felt the quality was good but not exceptional.
