Zigni House

About Zigni House

Not too far from the centre of trendy Islington, just a short walk along the Essex Road, Zigni House is a change from the many and varied restaurants of Upper Street – which really is saying something. Surrounded by authentic artefacts and tribal style art works, guests to Zigni House sample exciting and uniquely authentic East African and Eritrean cuisine. Consisting of both meat based and vegetarian stews and slowly cooked casseroles alongside the sourdough-ish traditional bread known as injera, Zigni House’s trademark cuisine is both heart and belly warming, taste bud tingling and flavoursome, eaten in the African style, by which we mean sans knife and fork, sharing with your fellow tablemates and with plenty of finger licking too. Even coffee is somehow ceremonial here at Zigni House, served with nibbles, incense and with its very own traditions. Nowhere in London is quite like this, a cultural journey and culinary adventure all at once, in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere with excellent service and unmissable food.

Average meal at Zigni. Service was quite slow and the place was pretty much empty which was a shame for a Christmas time Thursday night. Starters were ok although falafel was very dry, mains were better but again lacked any real punch. It's an interesting experience if you've never had this type of food before but there are better alternatives for this cuisine out there.

Delicious food. Good portions. Sloppy service...would recommend though.

The food was nice but not amazing. The restaurant was cold and we had to keep our coats on! Service was good. Overall I thought Zigni was a bit overpriced for what is effectively a cafe.

Zigni House in Islington is a real experience and find! Lovely family run business which they obviously take great pride in. Gorgeous artefacts that you can look at all night and all in a homely setting. The food is so YUM and great fun to learn about and share. Not close by to me but I'd definitely make the journey to go there especially and take my family and friends.
