About London Transport Museum

Lively exhibitions explore the powerful link between transport and the growth of modern London, its culture and society since 1800; full of light, colour and movement, the Museum explores how transport has given the City its unique cultural identity. The collection contains a wealth of heritage vehicles, posters, artworks, photographs, film and video footage, engineering drawings, uniforms, station signs and tickets.

Highlights include the iconic red London Routemaster bus, the world’s first Underground steam train and the ‘padded cell’ – one of the first electric locomotive Underground trains dating back to 1890.

The Design for travel gallery showcases pioneering advertising posters and artworks. The displays include Harry Beck’s original artwork for his ground breaking London Underground map, cutting edge graphic design, architecture and vehicle design. It also explains the development of the internationally recognisable ‘cross-bar and circle’ roundel logo.

.

The galleries are full of interactive exhibits for young people and adults alike, including real buses and trains to play on, and drama characters bring stories alive in an entertaining and informative way.

People can finish their day by browsing in the Museum’s shop and relaxing with a coffee or a themed transport cocktail – the Routemaster, Metropolitan Mixture or Anorak, in the Museum’s Upper Deck café-bar.

The Museum’s depot at Acton offers monthly behind-the-scenes guided tours and occasionally opens to the public for special open weekends.

Scale models and dioramas are a useful way to give a three-dimensional impression of something too large to fit in the displays or to recreate an item or scene that no longer exists. Some of our vehicle models are historic items made many years ago, while a number of station models were specially commissioned for the new Museum displays. We have also included some historic toys which may not be accurate models but tell interesting stories.

The Museum's unique photographic collection reflects London's public transport history from the 1860s to the present day. The core of the collection is made up of the old London Transport photographic archive of over 150 000 black and white photographs. The collection also includes a smaller archive of colour material, as well as historic albums and prints from all periods. Over 16,000 images are now available to view and purchase on-line, with new photographs added regularly. Each image has a brief caption, stating location and date (where known) to assist retrieval.
