Toptable says about L'Oranger

L'Oranger restaurant in London is the kind of special place you feared they weren't making any more. It's a pretty, polished French restaurant serving the classics of French cuisine. These seasonal works of art come from the kitchen of Laurent Michel who has served in triple-starred Michelin establishments in France before gracing St James's with his savoir faire. The elegant dining room is lit by a glass-dome ceiling, filled with starched linen, fresh flowers and gleaming tableware and peopled with fleet uniformed waiters. Seasonally-changing Provencal dishes might include fillet of beef en croute with bone marrow and fourme d'Ambert cheese with veg cooked with rosemary barbajuans. Fine wines, superb cheeseboard, excellent service.

l'Oranger is a beautiful restaurant - the decor and ambience exude restrained quality and are a complete delight. And the service and food live up to the high standards effortlessly. Our main courses, for example, comprised slow-cooked lamb shoulder; possibly the most delicious lamb either of us had ever tasted. We had very different starters - yet both were perfect in their way, and exquisitely presented. The prices were high, but well worth it. A very special place.

Went with my other half under the Toptable offer. It was good value for money although the set menu was limited but the food quality, ambience and service more than made up for it. We had been given a smaller table initially, but they kindly offered a more private corner table. Food was great, pumpkin soup was beautiful. My chicken was done perfect. The bits in between were unexpected but great as well (amuse bouche, palette cleansers). Portions were quite sizeable but would definitely go back.

A suberb evening. Only issue was some initial confusion re: the toptable offer - so not so credit-crunch busting after all! In the end we opted for the normal menu - the food was excellent. Fine dining and fantastic service. We were particularly well looked after by the charming, and very welcoming Maitre D', who has been there for 10 years. I would recommend this restaurant for any special occasion - it is pricey, but every thing was excellent - from presentation to taste. We'll be going again.

My first time at L'Oranger - walked in but it was virtually empty - apparently someone had hired the whole restaurant and then cancelled a few days before! Nonetheless, the service was excellent and very welcoming. The food was very good, and the sommelier was extremely helpful, even when our first choice of wine wasn't available.

Not a cheap place, but I think I will go back when it's a bit busier and try it again, as I think with a bit of buzz in the room it would be a lot better ambiencewise
