Nasty hostel
Stayed at the Dover castle hostel recently and frankly, it was quite depressing.
To start, there was a musty smell throughout the place, the showers were poor and smelt of sewerage and there was a general dirtiness about the place.
The worst part however was the people staying there. Me and my girlfriend were in a 12 bed 'mixed' dorm which has only creepy kinds of guys in it. A lot of the people there weren't even backpackers! They'd get up for work in the morning!
Needless to say we left after one night and paid a little extra for someplace else. I advise u do the same.
What to expect
The location of this hostel is really good. Its about a 10 minute walk to the London Bridge, and a 20 min walk to St.Pauls cathedral. You can also walk about 200Meters to catch the metro. One of the first things i noticed about this hostel was that it had a really weird musty smell. I stayed there for four days and i never really got used to it. Also, the bathrooms smell bad and aren't really clean. The place was also a bit run down, its definitley not a new place. The staff was extremely helpful and nice. Anytime we had a question they were more than happy to help out. I would recommend this to a single traveller or a group of travellers who are looking to meet new people. I would not recommend this place for a couple, or someone looking for a luxurious-care free environment.
just okay
Stayed at this hostel at the very end of my trip. It has a lot of potential, but never quite makes the cut. The staff is very friendly. Our main problems came with very loud roommates for two nights, not a very good breakfast, and the fact that 8 out of 10 times the nearby tube station was closed. The station at Dover Castle is only open during peak hours. So not before 10 AM, I believe it closes in the afternoon, and it does close early if you plan to stay out late. One other problem is that people left their stuff. When I got there there was a wine bottle and snacks under the next bed, flip flops and random stuff under my bed, and it sat there for the three days I stayed.
In the average
I've been at Dover Castle for a couple of days. The place is in the average, is not dirty but is not but not exactly bright. I slept in a 8 bed dorm that was too small for 8 people, and there were only two showers for all the floor (curiously always free) The hostel is located in the area 1, close to a tube station black line, and to london bridge.
For the price I paid it's a good value for the money.
Awesome Place For Backpackers
I am a travel agent, and i went to explore Europe. I stayed at the Dover Castle in Central London because the price was so awesome. When we got there we checked in and delt with a very friendly staff and even had a complimentary breakfast each day. This hostel is close to train stations and is within walking distance of alot of the sights including London Town and the Bridge. Everytime i go to london or i recommend for someone to go to london i always send them to Dover Castle and they always enjoy themselves.
