About Grim's Dyke Hotel
The house was purchased in 1890 by Sir William and Lady Gilbert. Sir William made many changes which included a sunken rose garden, large greenhouses for exotic fruit and a large lake. On 29 May 1911 Gilbert invited two local girls to swim in the lake. One got into difficulties and Gilbert, trying to save her, suffered a heart attack and died. Lady Gilbert had the lake drained and closed. She lived in the house until her death in 1936.
From 1937 to 1963 the house was purchased by the local council and leased as a rehabilitation home for men suffering from Tuberculosis. It has also emerged that the house was the location of highly secretive work during World War II.
Since the present ownership in 1996 the house has been fully restored and now has a Three Star Silver award. Gilberts Restaurant has an AA Rosette and two RAC Dining Awards. Gilbert and Sullivan operas are held fortnightly. In the summer months there are guided tours followed by a cream tea and entertainment. Following last years successful Opera in the Garden these are again staged in July 2004 and August 2005. Additional entertainment ranges from Murder Mystery Dinners to a selection of special events throughout the year. Gilbert's bedroom is now a magnificent suite with a four poster bed. There are an additional eight period suites in the main house and 37 rooms in the separate Garden Lodge.
Grim's Dyke Hotel draws people from all over the world who enjoy the unique atmosphere of staying in the house where Sir William Gilbert lived and died, the gardens and surrounding woodlands, the excellent dining and the feeling of peace and tranquility so close to the centre of London.
