How disgusting blaming the lack of renovation on 9/11/01, we were there 9/2000
I just read the much more recent reviews of the Claverly Hotel, in particular, the response by management dated 2/2/2005. I was quite repulsed by his reference to the reason they did not renovate - September 11th. How opportunistic and convenient for them ! It took 4 years + to get over 9/11, and it took them another 3+ years to actually begin renovations. And what does 9/11 have to do with the Brits anyway? We were at the Claverly for one week in September 2000 and to say that the room was a dump was a gross understatement. We would have left the day we walked in the door, however, there was not a spare room anywhere in London, and believe me, I looked! Yes, the location was great, however, the hotel was worn to say the least. But what was the reason that our sheets were not changed for one full week? Maybe that was due to the bombing of London during the Blitz??? Americans, do your patriotic duty and a favor to yourself...stay away from this pit! They'd rather blame anything, even the death of 3,000 people on 9/11, than on their own greed for not wanting to invest in their property. They totally disgust me. There is no reason for not cleaning a hotel, not changing sheets and towels and not, in general, maintaining the hotel.
Well worn, but quaint
Sadly the hotel closed for renovations end January 2009. However, we stayed three days in a 4-poster room in November 2008, and liked it so much we returned mid-January 2009 for another weekend. The hotel is charming, but worn and threadbare in places, but the price reflects this as it's a third of the neighbouring hotels in the same street, and it's hard to get this value for money in this part of London. Their full English breakfast buffet is top notch too. Being so close to Harrods and the museums is wonderful. We'll miss the place and look forward to them reopening, hopefully without hiking the prices too much!
Excellent value for money
Last weekend we stayed at the Claverly and for London standards this hotel offers you great value for money. The location is perfect, the rooms are clean and the staff is friendly and helpfull. For a Knightsbridge hotel this is probably one of the best and economic options!
Absolutely wonderful!
My husband and I stayed here in Sept. and October 2008 and we were SO pleased with everything. The staff was exceptionally professional and helpful...they were always there if we had any questions or needed help. The area BEAUTIFUL. Quiet tree-lined street..nice and quiet but still very closeto the action. Walking distance to the tube (which we took everywhere) and lots of fun pubs, restaurants, etc. Very posh area, but still completely affordable prices. The breakfast was such a good deal for the price of the room, because it was FANTASTIC. Everything was completely fresh and very tasty. Rooms were great, very clean and comfortable. Next time we come to London we won't stay anywhere but here.
Sad Little Hotel
Well, what can I say? The staff were wonderful, pleasant and very helpful in any questions we had. The breakfast cannot be beat...full American. It is a great location no doubt. The linens were clean and no smells in the room.
But the poor hotel is worn out and needs everything. The furniture in our room was so worn and beat up that it could not even be given to charity. There was a big tear in the chair in our room with stuffing coming out. Noises from up above woke us in the night. The carpets throughout the hotel and furniture all need replacing.
A note to the owners. Shame on you for keeping this fine hotel in such a poor condition. I think you could fine better furnishings at a Salvation Army or Goodwill.
