I did not enjoy my stay here at all. Maybe I'm picky, but I stayed in 3 hostels and 1 hotel while I was in London, and this is by far the worst and least value of them all.

Location:

A lot of reviews mentioned the location being great.. It is indeed located conveniently between two tube stations with small shops/cafes around. But real activities here start after dark with lots of pubs and clubs around. However, the first thing I saw when I got out of the tube station was a man running with only one sock and jeans on being chased then tackled by the police. Needless to say, I felt a bit uneasy about the safety of this location.

The hostel itself is located above a pub, with a live music club across the street. These venues don't end until 2am, so even if you love wearing ear plugs to sleep, you can still feel the vibration of the music. If it's not noisy enough already, the traffic on the streets is equally loud. If you stay out to party all night anyways, then this is probably and OK place for you.

Cleanliness:

The room has character compared to some of the fancy newer hostels, but the bathroom is smelly! The shower room has the button-activated style shower head. This is fine with me since it is a great water-saving device. However, if you press the button twice in a row, the pan starts to overflow. I'm not sure what the dorm style shower would be like since we got the ensuite, but taking a shower was not a pleasant experience. The website says the rooms are cleaned daily, but when I ran into a cleaning staff member and thought he was going in to our room to clean, he said, oh, no one's moving out, I have no business cleaning here. What does that mean??? There's always someone moving in and out, does that mean you NEVER clean the bathroom? You only change the bedding when someone moves out? I can say with confidence that our ensuite shower hasn't been cleaned in a long time because there were shaving gel on the door that looks like it's been there for months since I moved in, and it was still there when we left.

Value:

The website boasts wireless internet, continental breakfast, etc. The wireless is only accessible from the pub (or maybe the "chill-out" room, which is a dark and smelly basement with a broken flat-screen TV so I did not go there much), and it is not a secure connection. The breakfast was cheap white bread loaves from Sainsbury's, some spreads, milk and flakes for cereal. There was also coffee or tea, but the hot water was cloudy with white sediments. I guess technically this is a continental breakfast, but I stayed at a different hostel after this for $5USD more afterwards, and the continental breakfast was awesome.

Anyway, for the $ paid I would much rather be more comfortable elsewhere. It's not like the pubs aren't easily accessible by the tube if you want to go out some nights while in London, but I'd much rather sleep in a quiet and safe place.

My fiance and I wanted to get away for a week before the chaos of our wedding started, but we didn't have much to spend. We booked St. Christopher's Camden after looking at a few hostels in the London area. We chose this one because of the location, and the price.

While we were there, we loved the location! A little noisy at night...but it's Camden town. Very famous for the alternative lifestyles and such, so we weren't really surprised. Great restaurants and bars close by, along with grocery stores and of course, a lot of shopping.

Belushi's is located on the first floor and provides (while we were there) nightly entertainment. Good food and friendly staff.

We stayed in a 10 person room..which was quite the experience. My fiance and I are both neat freaks, so this probably wasn't the best option for us. Our last night, there was a mistake (on my part) with our booking, but the staff was very helpful and moved us to another room.

The first room that we stayed in (10 bed) was located just above the bar, and unfortunately just above a speaker. Getting to sleep early wasn't much of an option, but for a cheap bed, it was worth it.

On one occasion during our stay, we had some troubles with some of the other guests smoking and drinking in the bathroom. As this is illegal in London, we reported the incident, and the staff took care of it right away. Apparently if the hostel was caught allowing such activity, they could be fined heavily or even shut down!

As far as the bathroom..yeah, sometimes it sucked sharing a bathroom with so many other people, but after a few days, we got into a cycle, and those of us who were there longer knew when and when not to use the facilities. The toilets and sinks were kept clean. The showers could have used a good washing though.

Breakfast was provided with our stay, and consisted of mostly bread/toast and cereal. As an American, this was fine with me...but it drove my bread-based-lifeform-European fiance crazy! But it was a meal, none the less.

There are a few good sized markets down the street, and we would get a lot of non perishable food items there, just to keep with our belongings.

The 'common room' in the basement had seen better days, and had a little bit of a strange smell to it...but we didn't spend much time down there. Only once to watch a film, and a few times to use the coin operated internet.

All in all, our stay was pleasant. We kept our days really busy, and were always glad to have a safe place to sleep when we got back exhausted.

It was our first experience in a hostel (and probably our last now that we have a baby), but we got exactly what we paid for. By no means expect a 5 star resort...but a safe, clean place to rest your head at night, with a basic breakfast.

My first experience in staying in a hostel. The hostel was very clean although the toilet and shower facilities were quite old. The common area was great for meeting people. Very bare basic internet facility, luckily there is a great internet cafe down the road. Breakfast was bare basic toast and cereal. Staff were very friendly and they have a locked luggage room.

First of all, I read in another review that Camden Town is a scary place at night, but this is just unfair to Camden: it's a place where there is lot of good night action in pubs and clubs which is more "alternative" than what you can find, say, in Soho. The area is however very fun, and also safe to walk around at any time of day and night.

The hostel itself is in the average: the rooms are basic, as is the breakfast. The staff varies from helpful to rude depending on who you find (I stayed 6 nights so had the chance to speak with various staff members, including a nice Italian guy who offered me an espresso for breakfast). The bathrooms are small and ten to be a bit crowded. Overall, the dorms and bathrooms look like they need to be renewed, even though not urgently.

The Belushi Bar is a good thing to have on the ground floor: it comes handy for a first (or last) pint; it has decent pub dishes; the staff of the bar can also help you with problems at the hostel.

There is now 24 hours reception, even though you can enter and exit at any time you want with electronic card. One night, however, my card stopped working but luckily the Belushi bar was still open (it was 1 AM) so I didn't have to sleep on the sidewalk. In a place like Camden Town (or London in general), where people stay out until late night, an hostel really needs to provide a 24 hours reception.

All in all, this is probably the best cheap option if you want to sleep in Camden Town. However, given Central London's excellent bus and tube transport system, you can consider sleeping elsewhere in a better hostel.

I stayed here in a party of 14 for a hen night. I have never stayed in a hostel before and was not looking forward to it. We had a room of six and a room of 8. I was pleasantly surprised how clean it was, I had heard horror stories of rats and bugs in other hostels. So I was glad not to even see a spider in sight. Also breakfast is included in the price which was great.

As we had a back room there was no noise from the road and we were on the second floor so no noise from the night club.

The down sides were the shower was mouldy and the floor tilted away from the plug hole so there was always a pool of water on the floor by the shower door. The sanitary bin was overflowing - not nice to see. Only two plug sockets for the whole room and one mirror in the bathroom so for 6 girls trying to get ready for a night out this was not good!!!!! But for £18 in London what can you expect?

I wouldn't have stayed in the room with people who weren't in the same party as me and I won't ever stay in a hostel again but that's no reflection on the place it is just not somewhere I would stay.
