About The Cranley

Situated in a quiet street in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the Cranley is one of London's most charming townhouse hotels. An ideal city centre haven appealing to both business and leisure travellers, the Cranley brings together the best of established tradition and service, and the advantages of most up-to-date expected from a top class hotel of 21st Century.

Furnished with antiques and hand-embroidered linen fabrics, it has an understated elegance and air of sophistication. A number of rooms boast an elegant king-sized 4-poster bed, whilst the majority are furnished with equally dramatic half-tester canopied beds, all dressed with cotton sheets, large square feather pillows and traditional pure woollen blankets. Every room is air-conditioned and has an antique desk or writing table with conveniently placed power and telecommunications sockets giving the business traveller access to two telephone lines with direct dial facility, a modem connection, voicemail and broadband connections. Even the TVs are interactive, providing access to the Internet. Most rooms also have a separate table enabling guests to enjoy room service from the imaginative menu without disturbing their work.

Enjoy the excellent service from the friendly service minded staff. The hotel also offers a welcome glass of sherry or whisky upon check in, complimentary afternoon tea with warm scones and champagne and canapés in the evening. All combine to make a stay at the Cranley memorable.

My wife and I spent four nights in London starting on the 14th of October, 2009. We booked The Cranley based on a recommendation of a friend and we were positively surprised. Here are our our thoughts:

The hotel:

We felt as being in a friend's home than a hotel. I travel often for business, and Cranley is completely different than typical hotels. The hotel is small and charming, more of a bed and breakfast than a hotel.

The room was a great size - even to American standards - and the decor typical. Bathroom was also on the large side with a great bath/shower.

One thing that we'd recommend to the hotel management is to provide larger screen TVs and wider channel selection.

The staff:

Staff were friendly and efficient. room was made up on time, and at night, chocolates placed on bed. One night my wife took ill and i asked the night manager for hot water. Although he was the only staff in the hotel, i had a tray of hot water in my room within 3 minutes!

The food:

we did not eat breakfast at the hotel, but we saw the trays delivered to the rooms. They looked good. My wife enjoyed the afternoon tea, and i enjoyed the glass of champagne and appetizers in the evening.

Location:

The hotel is located in South Kensington on a quiet street. We loved it! We were close to a couple of Underground stations (5 minute walk from Gloucester Road station) and also walking distance to a variety of locations that we wanted to visit. There are a few really good restaurants/pubs around and we tried a few of them.

By reading the reviews, I guess it depends what room you stay in. Our room was exactly like what was shown on their website and we had a view of the street from the 3rd floor, which was just fine for us (people watching)! Rooms aren't gigantic, but if you're on vacation, shouldn't you be out and about exploring anyways?? It's just for sleeping. We found it just fine, but I see that irked some people. That said, the bed was large and comfortable (big poster bed with duvet). Breakfast was great too. The area is fantastic (kensington/chelsea area)...quiet and great restaurants nearby. It was a nice place to spend a honeymoon rather than a crowded hotel chain (we felt like we were the only one's in the hotel as it was so quiet). I would definitely go back. Also, we had no issues with heat, smells, rude staff, lack of service or anything of that nature. I guess one bad apple of a staff member made some people's experience bad?? Nice to see the hotel responding on those reviews and acknowledging it. One thing to warn...make sure you are looking at 'the Cranley' when booking...not the 'Cranley Gardens' which is nearby and a dump. We went there by accident upon arrival and were very relieved to find out our cab driver made a mistake.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for chosing to stay at The Cranley and giving us your feedback. Like most townhouses in London we also have a number of rooms on the lower ground level. As mentioned they are all very spacious (more so than most rooms else where in the hotel) but I can appreciate that not everyone likes this location. We do our very best to allocate rooms to our guests requests, especially when we know their preferences however when the hotel is full this becomes more challenging. We are glad to hear the rest of your stay was satisfactory and hope that you may wish to try staying with us again in the future, albeit in another room.

Kind Regards,

John Alexander

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your recent stay with us. We are very grateful for your comments but sorry to hear that your overall experience was not a good one and did not reflect previous comments and experiences. We pride ourselves on the service that is offered at The Cranley and even when very busy try our very best to meet everyone's needs and requirements. I am pleased however to say that with positive improvements to the team and continued training we hope to have addressed the issues you have raised.

Kind Regards,

We stayed here for one night as part of a theatre package with Superbreak. Room comfortable although not large. No tea/coffee tray in room, but on arrival a large pot of tea was brought to our room (with biscuits) and we discovered you only had to ring down and almost instantly tea/coffee/hot water would arrive ( no charge). We also had complimentary afternoon tea in the lounge area with scones, jam and cream! There is no dining room - slightly odd, but a beautiful continental breakfast is served in your room at your chosen time, and we easily obtained more marmalade/hot water etc. Not too far to walk to tube. Quiet, good air con. Service excellent. Would stay again
