It's like staying in a college fraternity house, only cleaner
Our travel agent recommended the Generator Hostel because it is inexpensive, clean, and safe, BUT he didn't tell us about the not so endearing bits about Generator Hostel.
- It is noisy at the Generator Hostel. The party never stops. Bring earplugs.
- The decor is warehouse rave. Blue lights. Industrial feel. Not cozy.
- It is massive and unless you are a group of hot Australian females, you don't really meet people.
- Showers are small and there's no shelf to place your shower stuff.
- Internet is slow (but at least it is available)
- I don't care for the Generator Club. The music is overplayed top 40. It's better to go out and enjoy the real London nightlife
- Crazy lady cleans the 0 floor bathroom at 7am when early birds need to use the showers
There are some nice aspects of the hostel that deserve a mention:
+ It is clean
+ Overnight security keeps it safe and secure
+ Location is pretty darn good. Russell Square tube is central. (especially for the price)
+ Can't beat the price for a stay in London.
I will not return to the Generator Hostel the next time that I am in London.
Far Too Massified
This hostel is simply way too big and massified. While it is well equipped with everything you need, if you're looking for a nice, cozy, friendly atmosphere, this is not the place to go. Everything is huge - the dorms, the bathrooms, etc. The bar is good fun, as long as your room is not downstairs from it. Overall a well equipped place, but it's more of a backpacker processing plant than a nice friendly hostel.
if you need just a good location...
If you're looking for a hostel where you can meet people, just forget about this place. It's a huge, huge hostel, just like an army camp, hundreds of doors and beds. There's a bar/disco in the first floor, just like a thousand in any city in the world. It's so big that the guy at the door always ask you to show your card, even if you haven't checked in yet. Definitely it's impossible to be friendly in a so big hostel. But if you just need it's a good location, that's the place.
Nice location
The rooms were abit dirty, but the shared bathrooms looked liek they had just been renoavted & were quite good & always clean. The bar was good with lots of cheap drinks which always helps when your on a budget! Staff were pleasent & helpful, overall quite a good hostel.
London 2007
Went backpacking i London during 4 months. During my stay at the generator i met heaps of new friend and by that time you´re allowed to stay at The Gen for as long as u wanted so it became my home during 4 months.
Now, there´s a limit for how long u ca stay, So the Gen will never be the same without the regulars in room 6,16,12,7,15
