Just a quiet accomodation to sleep
I have just come back from London and my accomodation was this one. Well... it's cleaner than other hostels... but the building need to be renewed... as well as the window of the room where I slept. Not too bad... 'cause it's very cheap and in a very, very good position, just few minutes walking from Buckingham Palace and from Victoria Station. Quite a little noisy, but it could be OK for limited budget travellers.
a flat in a student residence
This is a review concerning a one bedroom flat at Wigram House.
I was very anxious about what would look like Wigram House. At the time I reserved, there wasn’t many reviews on Tripadvisor, only 3 and no traveller pictures. All those reviews were about student rooms. But what interested me was that there is 2 flats in the building and I needed more than a single room because it was for a long stay. I reserved with the University of Westminster accomodation center, called Unilet. To be able to have a flat, I had to reserved many months before my vacations and paid one month before arrival.
My flat was more than what I expected. There was a bedroom (very small), a kitchenet/livingroom and a bathroom with a shower. The furniture is very basic. In the bedroom there is a bed (not the more comfortable, but ok), a wardrobe and a small dresser. In the kitchenet/livingroom, there was usual kitchen appliances : stove, fridge and microwave, boiler, dishes and cutlery (but no toaster), and a desk, a chair, a sofa, a small dresser and a televison (5 channels available). In the bathroom, the shower is powerfull and hot water was always available.
A very interesting point here is the free wifi internet acces.
The place is old and it would need to be refresh especially the carpets : there is many stains on it. But I guess that would improve the rates. Because it is so in need to be refresh, I think it must be difficult to make the place look perfectly clean. So I would not say it is spotless, but my flat was clean and my bed was change each week.
For the reception, it is ok. There is someone at the desk 24/24, every day.
Now for the location : that is the better side of this place. Just of Victoria Street, at one corner from Westminster Cathedral, 5 minutes walking to the Victoria station, 10 minutes from Westminster Abbaye and Big Ben, 15 minutes from Buckingham Palace, really a very well situation.
All in all, I was please with my stay. It is really no frills, very basic, you got to keep in mind that it is a student residence, not a b&b or an hotel, but for the rates it is fair enough. I paid 52L/night. The only complaint I have is that they often forgot about cleaning my bathroom. I think it is because there is only 2 accomodations with en-suite. But when I ask for it to be done, it was done and it was clean.
Beautiful, great location, but not the most comfortable accomodation
You really can't beat Wigram House's location -- it's on a beautiful and quiet residential street, but only a block away from shopping and restaurants, and only a few blocks away from Victoria Station (a main underground station) and St. James's Park. It's also within easy walking distance of Westminster Abbey, Big Ben/the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, etc. The staff were also friendly and helpful. However, the beds were some of the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in (and I've stayed in quite a few hostels/dorms). The showers were also -- while clean-looking -- quite smelly (like mildew). Overall, I'd stay here again just for the fantastic location, but it's not for everyone.
not so bad
I didnt expect too much, it as just a place to sleep. Was comfortable to have some cutlery and dishes in the kitchen to cook some basic dinner. Room tiny and not very welcoming, but sheets were clean, and bathroom, although shared, was clean as well, which I was surpised to see.
However my negative experience was the noise in the corridor. I almost did not sleep. Some students were walking and talking loudly all the time, plus the floor was noisy. So basically, I stayed there only to sleep, but didn't manage too.
The positive point is the location.
excellent location, very simple accomodation
this hotel location is excellent. our first day we visited westminster, trafalgar, covent garden without using public transport but always walking; but the area is well connected with lot of buses and victoria station. nice sourroundings with victorian houses and the beautiful westminster cathedral.
the hotel is very simple but clean, with friendly and unformal staff. our room was really little but comfortable, with comfortable beds, basin, table, little shelf. the kitchen on our floor was good too, with microwave, refrigerator, toaster and other useful things. we could easily prepare our own breakfast.
toilets and bathroom was in good number and clean... actually not always clean, due to other hosts' fault and not to hotel's fault. this was the only negative point of the place, which is altogether good, compared with the really low price for london(we payed 40 pounds for the room).
