International House is definately budget accomodation. For our first trip abroad we wanted something close to Waterloo Station and the closest tube station...and cheap! We found it here!

As with the previous post, most of it is still true almost a year later. The rooms were tiny, but we expected that. It is also true that all doors slammed shut any time of day or night. Rooms were a bit musty, needed a good paint job and new carpet, but we did expect this (it was a surprise for our teenaged daughters, tho!). The kitchen was clean and well stocked with plates, utensils etc...The shared water closet and shower room were clean and did have toilet paper! The tap dripped, but so do mine at home. There was an ironing board and iron available on the main level. The common lounge was large, but not well used.

We found all the staff friendly and helpful. Also found a pub kitty-corner to the place called The 3 Stags (Lambeth Road and Kennington). Had a few pints there at night. Also a nice breakfast place called The Corner Cafe which was down Lambeth Road on the corner just before you go under the tracks towards the Thames.

Did I mention that we could see the top of the London Eye from our 5th floor room? We could also see part of the Parliament Buildings. Quite a sight for us Canadians, who had only seen photos of them!

We liked International House and its proximity to the Thames, London Eye, Imperial War Museum, Waterloo Station and Lambeth North. There were quite a few places to eat, get snacks, newspapers etc...mostly on Kennington. Check out the side streets for small pubs. They are fine indeed!

we stayed at the university for 4 nights and thought it was really value for money, if you want 5 star accom book into a hotel not a university hall!!!! the best location ever, a very nice walk (about 10 mins) and your right in the middle of it all, london eye, thames, big ben and westminster abbey. at some points it was loud and people coming and going did cause disturbance. The kitchen was well equipped and clean, we rarely had to wait for the showers. the train station was so close and made our exploring easier!

stay here if you are happy with basic amenities and the value for the money outways any turn down service a hotel would give me!

I would recommend this hotel as long as you realise it really is basic. Only 200 yards from Lambeth North Tube.

Hi,

We stayed at the University of Westminster (International House) for a week from 16-23 August 2006. The overall impression of this student residence was that it had not been renovated since it opened, probably in the sixties.

We had two beds shoe horned into a room for a single occupant and as a result the head of one of the beds was underneath the writing desk! There was little room to move around in given the two beds.

The mattresses on both beds were worn out and uncomfortable since the some of the springs were unpadded. Hence the beds rate as the worst I've experienced.

The room itself was well used with dirty old stained wall-to-wall carpeting and peeling wall paint. The curtains were barely hanging on so they could not be closed properly.

There were no hangers provided so the wet towels could not be dried out and there was a resultant musty smell.

The doors of the shared kitchen, bathroom and shower room would slam shut whenever anyone used the doors. These loud slamming noises would disturbed sleep.

The toilet paper ran out in the shared bathroom on a Saturday and the person on duty couldn't locate the replacement rolls.

We could not check out early and receive a refund because we booked through a third party website and not directly through the university.

On the plus side, International House is convenient to Waterloo station where the Eurostar from Paris currently terminates.

Perhaps this is a case of paying a budget rate but expecting at least clean accommodations.

In short if you're planning to stay at the University of Westminster (International House) expect a grimy room and disturbing noises from the doors slamming shut. In our experience, this would rate as a 0 star accommodation. It's shelter from the weather but not an appealing stay.

Nice place to stay in London, especially for the price. Location in South London is convenient. Very close to Parliament, Big Ben, Wesminster Abbey, and you can walk. Nearest subway is Lambeth which is about .5 miles and easy to walk.

International House is just a small dorm room with twin beds, nothing lavish, but was quiet and clean. Shared shower and bathroom were clean and generally we had no trouble getting into the shower timely each morning. We stayed for 14 days at International House. Nothing fancy, just a nice, cheap, small dorm room at a very good price relative to other hotels.

During our stay, we noticed International House did NOT have as much camaraderie between guests as other hostels we have been. There is a common room but there was few people using it during our stay most nights.

If you desire to spend as most of your time sightseeing and very little time in your hotel room, then I highly recommend.
